ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS ABOUT HYPNOSIS

by Mary Elizabeth Raines

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a state of heightened suggestibility, often accompanied by profound physical relaxation. In hypnosis, we are communicating with and programming the subconscious rather than the conscious mind

Does being hypnotized feel weird?

No. In fact, it is a normal, everyday state. We all go in and out of hypnosis many times a day. An example of this is daydreaming, or being completely engrossed in a hobby or a TV show. You enter a hypnotic state at least twice in every 24 hours: when you are falling asleep, and in that groggy time just as you are waking up.

Can the hypnotist control my mind or manipulate me?

No. The hypnotized person is always in control, no matter how deep their level of hypnosis is. They can emerge at any time simply by desiring to do so. You will not accept any suggestion that goes against your moral code or belief system. You can only be hypnotized to do what you truly desire to do.

Will I reveal all my secrets?

You won’t reveal any deep, dark secrets in hypnosis unless you choose to do so.

I’d like to experience hypnosis, but I think I’m one of those people who can’t be hypnotized.

Good news! Nearly everyone can be hypnotized! All you need is a normal ability to pay attention and a willingness to follow your hypnotist’s easy instructions. Some studies show that the more intelligent a person is, the easier it is for them be hypnotized.

What if I get stuck in hypnosis, like the guy in the movie Office Space?

It’s impossible to get stuck in hypnosis. If something should happen to your hypnotist, you would either wake up right away, or fall asleep and then wake up. No one in history has ever been stuck in hypnosis.

Can you hypnotize my boyfriend or girlfriend to find out if they’ve been cheating on me, or can you hypnotize me to discover if I’ve been molested?

No. Hypnosis is not a lie detector. People do not repress memories of molestation over the age of 5; those who have been molested usually remember all too clearly, although the subconscious–especially when this thought has been implanted by someone else–can easily fabricate a false story. We can use hypnosis to refresh memory, but because of the unreliability of facts obtained through hypnosis, evidence obtained by hypnosis is inadmissible in a court of law.

Does hypnosis really work?

You bet! While hypnosis is not a magic wand, there are thousands of stories of dramatic success from hypnosis! Your results are dependent upon four factors:

1. You truly want the results for which you are being hypnotized, without any reservations;
2. What you desire must be withint the realm of possibility and science. Sorry; we can’t turn brown eyes into blue eyes or instantly heal a broken leg. What we CAN do, however, is help you to become more comfortable with your brown eyes, or help you manage pain and boost your body’s natural healing.
3. You cooperate completely with the hypnotist’s instructions.
4. You continue to reinforce the new, positive behavior in your daily life.

Will you make me cluck like a chicken?

Only if I need the eggs. You may have seen a stage hypnosis show where people have done goofy things; volunteers for stage shows understand, however, that they are going to be in skits and have a desire on some level to show off and to have a good time.
